The LNER Class J15 was originally the GER Class Y14 and designed by TW Worsdell in 1883. One of this class held a strange record of being the fastest engine ever constructed (9 hours). They were well known as a reliable, versatile and capable class. Luckily, No 7564 (LNER number) has been preserved by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society and runs on the North Norfolk Railway. Although in the illustration both Toby and this engine carry LNER livery, they are similar in both being of GER origin and suitable to have been in Toby's flashback of the docks at Yarmouth. More detail of this loco is on the LNER Encyclopaedia.- many thanks to correspondent Corbs for the info, pictures and for making the connection!
"The Old Engine" appeared in Christopher Awdry's book "Toby, Trucks and Trouble" (1988).
