Annie and Clarabel

Annie and Clarabel as pictured in their starring book, "Tank Engine Thomas Again" (1949) - A non-corridor suburban composite (Annie) and its companion brake (Clarabel). The things on the track to the right and left at each end of each coach are called BOGIES. (These particular coaches, by the way, are Edward Exley models of LMS suburbans running on Testbedford Junction). This carriage design makes it obvious where the guard lives, except when so cruelly tripped up - in the right-hand compartment of the brake carriage. In this guise they were presented in "Percy the Small Engine" (1956), where poor Clarabel's floorboards are hacked to give Percy steam through the flood, in "Twin Engines" (1960) coupled to Gordon's Special Coach, and "Branch Line Engines" (1961), when they are moved out of the carriage shed to make way for Daisy. However, the four-wheeled Annie and Clarabel familiar to TV viewers are not completely outlandish; they both rather resemble 19th century coaches such as No 100, with origins on London's Metropolitan Railway in 1868, and now running on the Kent and East Sussex Railway.

Annie & Clarabel

Annie and Clarabel are first shown in "Thomas the Tank Engine" (1946) although not yet then named.

The original Annie on the Ffarquhar Branch was over 50 when the Rev. described her in the 1979 annual. Now she is nearly 70 and thus the oldest Railway Series character by a long way:

"Of my coaches ANNIE is the real ‘antique’. She is 50 plus years old. I built her in 1927, when I was still at school, for a model line which my brother and I then had. I left school in 1929, and could do no more modelling till 1948. I then needed two coaches for my model Thomas. I built another coach to match, called them Annie and Clarabel, and Thomas had his train."
